'There Is No Way PR Can Rule Malaysia With Just Three Parties' Print E-mail By SM AMIN

There is no way that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will be able to govern the entire nation with a coalition of just three parties; PKR, DAP and PAS, according to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice president Chua Tian Chang.
More commonly known as Tian Chua, he said that in order to achieve their goal, the Opposition coalition would require fresh elements to bring down and eventually reform the current system.

"I would like to say that in the current scenario, there is no way for PR to govern with just three parties.

"If we want to change the formula of power that is in place now, we would need new elements," he said in a forum titled 'Reformasi 15 Tahun' (15 years of reformation) held at Bangsar Utama club Tuesday night.

Tian Chua added that a unity government is one of the elements and it can be achieved if PR is able to further disclose their plans and with the help of various groups urging for the matter to come to fruition.

Apart from that, he said the possibility for Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties to urge their leader to focus more on economy and solving the rakyat's woes will also become a key contributing factor.

He explained that this idea is not entirely farfetched especially since it is likely that within Umno itself, the feeling of doubt is already brewing and they themselves are not sure the ruling government can remain the way they are in light of the current state of the nation.

"I'm sure they feel need to sit down and discuss a different agenda," Tian Chua said.

"To me, I feel it is possible for the formation of a unity government. We are now in the midst of demanding for change.

"People no longer want to hear 'wait another five years until the next general election'...after fifteen years, the public has realized that reformation will not take place as long as BN is run by Umno," he added.

Tian Chua remains doubtful that there are leaders in BN with a strong enough conviction to want to realise the formation of a unity government because according to him, this matter requires a strong leadership.

"With the current state of BN leaders, I will not even dream that any of them will be able to get out from their old mentality and form a new leadership," he told a crowd of about 50 people.

Meanwhile, social activist, Hishamuddin Rais said, that in order to topple the current government, there are several methods that can be adopted; one of them being to form a unity government.

"I predict, based on my own theory, that there are four ways to bring down a government," Hishamuddin said.

"The first is a coup d'etat like how Suharto did to Sukarno. The second is through elections like in the United States of America, England and France. The next is through a reformist movement or a street movement and lastly through the agreement to form a unity government.

"It is not entirely impossible to form a unity government, it has happened before," Hishamuddin said at the forum where he was one of the panel members.

He added that based on an analysis of Opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's speech about August 31, it is clear that the former deputy prime minister is looking to form a unity government, despite the matter having been denied.

"He said it in the third last paragraph...'eventhough we reject the results of the 13th general election (GE13) we are ready to put aside differences and urge for a discussion to take place'.

"From my understanding, Anwar, from paragraphs 1 to 6, lined up one crisis after another that Malaysia is facing, namely economy, belief, religion, crime and several others. Those crisis are seen as grounds to begin a discussion, but was then denied," he said.

Apart from the two leaders, other panels at the forum were lawyer Latheefah Koya and PKR Youth's deputy chief, Khairul Anwar.
